Opening protection
A new door has to meet today’s wind code, not the old one’s
Broward County sits inside Florida’s High-Velocity Hurricane Zone. Palm Beach County sits in the Wind-Borne Debris Region instead. The two are related but separate sets of rules, and a new door has to be rated for whichever one applies.

Wind-load ratings and product approval
A door’s wind rating is a Design Pressure figure, tested for a specific door, not a general label like “hurricane-rated.” It’s documented through a Miami-Dade NOA or a Florida Product Approval, and the correct rating depends on the address’s wind zone and exposure.
Permits, county by county
Palm Beach County requires a permit for door replacement, and Boca Raton offers a same-day, over-the-counter version. Broward and Fort Lauderdale require permits generally. A replacement must meet the code in force at permit time, not the old door’s rating.

Do I need a permit to replace my garage door in Broward or Palm Beach County?
Yes. Palm Beach excludes overhead doors from its no-permit list, and Boca Raton offers a same-day permit for a straightforward swap. Broward and Fort Lauderdale require permits generally.
What’s the difference between a Miami-Dade NOA and a Florida Product Approval?
An NOA is the strictest hurricane certification, for Hurricane Zone counties. A Florida Product Approval is the statewide equivalent. Many doors carry both.
Does a new garage door have to meet current hurricane code even if the old one didn’t?
Yes. A replacement is new work and must meet the code in force at permit time, regardless of the old door’s rating.
