Miami garage door questions
Do I need a permit to replace a garage door in Miami?
Yes. The City of Miami’s Building Department issues the permit and takes applications through its iBuild portal. In practice the installer files it, with the door’s product approval attached.
Does a new garage door in Miami have to be hurricane rated?
Yes. Miami is in Miami-Dade County’s High-Velocity Hurricane Zone, so a replacement door needs a current product approval, such as a Miami-Dade Notice of Acceptance, even if the old door was never rated.
My house is from the late 1970s. Should I worry about the original garage door?
Not automatically. About half of Miami’s homes were built before 1980, and a door that age predates Florida’s 2002 building code. We’ll check the springs, track and opener and tell you whether it needs a repair or a replacement, which must meet today’s HVHZ rules.
