What goes in, and what to add
The opener
A motor unit moves a chain or belt along a rail, and a trolley on the rail pulls the door. Makers sell belt drive as the quiet one, chain drive as the durable one.
The safety parts
Two photo eyes, no higher than 6 inches off the floor, guard the opening, and the door must reverse when it hits a 2x4 laid flat. The wall button sits at least 5 feet up, away from children.

Add remotes and a keypad. Many current openers have Wi-Fi control built in (myQ on Chamberlain and LiftMaster), and a battery backup keeps the door moving in an outage.

Storm season and your opener
