What a replacement has to match
The opening
Width, height, headroom above the door and side room beside it decide what fits. A rated door is tested at set sizes, so a wider opening needs one rated for it.
The springs
A new door’s weight decides its springs. DASMA, the door industry’s trade group, warns a spring on the wrong door can shorten the life of the door or opener.
The look and the rating
Pick full-view glass, flush or raised panel; the rating must still fit your building. In Palm Beach County’s wind-borne debris region only openings with glass need impact protection; in Broward’s High-Velocity Hurricane Zone every garage door does.

How can I tell if my door is wind rated?
Look for the maker’s label showing its design pressure. DASMA says such a label signifies a rating, so no label means an unknown rating.
How much does a garage door replacement cost?
Size, style, glass or solid, the wind rating and the hardware all change it. We give the exact price at the door, once we’ve seen it, before any work.
Can I replace just one garage door panel?
Usually only if the maker still offers an identical section. DASMA warns non-identical parts may weaken a wind-rated door or invalidate its certification.
Why does a replacement need a new wind rating?
Today’s code judges a replacement, not the old door’s rating. Design pressure depends on your building’s wind speed, exposure, roof height and door size, and the building department has the final say.
Can I keep my old opener with the new door?
Sometimes, if it still reverses when it hits a 2x4 laid flat and has photo eyes low on both sides. Most openers made before 1993 lack them.
