Fort Lauderdale garage door questions
Do I need a permit to replace a garage door in Fort Lauderdale?
Yes. The city’s Development Services Department (Building Services) handles the permit, and the contractor doing the work normally pulls it. A homeowner can act as their own contractor through an Owner-Builder Affidavit, but has to appear in person to sign it.
Does my new garage door have to meet hurricane code even if the old one didn’t?
Yes. A replacement is treated as new work, so it has to meet the HVHZ code in force today, regardless of what the old door was rated for or whether it’s the same size. There is no grandfathering a like-for-like swap.
Will a new garage door affect my wind mitigation insurance inspection?
It can help. The wind mitigation form scores your whole house by its weakest opening, so an old, unrated garage door can hold back the credit even if every window is impact-rated. A door that passes the HVHZ large-missile test raises that score.
My garage door is original to a 1970s canal-front home. Is that a problem?
Not a problem, but worth a look. Homes from that era predate today’s wind code, and the door, springs and track are usually original too. We’ll tell you honestly whether it needs a repair or a full replacement before anything gets scheduled.
